NELLIE "JUNE"
born: June 4, 1924
died: August 25, 1932
June was the youngest of our family, the thirteenth child and third daughter. She was a near perfect child. Sweet and lovely as could be. Charlotte and June had been sick with sore throats for about three weeks. We thought they were recovering. June took a turn for the worse one day and she was taken to the hospital where she died the next day. It was diagnosed as Diphtheria.
June was only eight-years-old, blonde, blue-eyed and beautiful. The theme of the minister's sermon was "What would Heaven be like without little children?" I remember well this sermon. It left a life long impression. Those words gave me comfort when we lost our first grandson, who was an infant.
At the time we were in shock. Her death cast a veil over the whole community. The family was like zombies. We were devastated. Mother and Dad's dreams were shattered. The family would never be the same. I am sure we have not had as full a life as we would have had if June had lived, but again, I think, What would heaven be like without her charm. I can not fully describe the agony in our home. We all loved our little sisters so much, it did not seem possible that one could be gone.
Charlotte gave me a copy of letters which my mother had saved. One is written to June by her little friend Melvin. The other is a letter which June had written to a friend named Fern. We believe these were written when she was sick, just before she went to Heaven.
